Breakfast Martini

The Breakfast Martini is quite rightly considered a contemporary classic and is a prime example of a gin cocktail. It frequently appears in lists of the 100 most popular drinks. The breakfast-themed idea came about in 1996 from Salvatore Calabrese. The man was already chairman of the United Kingdom Bartender’s Guild at this point. Originally from Italy, he settled in London in the 1980s and worked in many well-known bars.

According to legend, the drink originated after a hard night at the bar. When Calabrese arrived home in the morning, his wife insisted he share breakfast with her. A rather unpopular meal among bartenders. So, he drank his beloved coffee and was persuaded to have a toast. The toast was typically English, spread with bitter orange marmalade. This is where the Italian finally got the idea to turn his experience with the marmalade into a drink. He eventually mixed gin, Cointreau, lemon juice, and orange marmalade.
