Blood and Sand Cocktail

The history of the Blood and Sand cocktail

The Blood and Sand is a timeless classic among whisky cocktails that will delight both experienced Scotch lovers and cocktail novices alike. Originally created in the 1920s, this drink was initially mixed with blended Scotch. However, over time, many whisky enthusiasts have begun to mix the Blood and Sand with single malt Scotch to add even more depth to its complex flavour profile.

The origins of Blood and Sand

The first written mention of the Blood and Sand in 1930 in the legendary Savoy Cocktail Book by Harry Craddock. The cocktail owes its dramatic name to the film of the same name "Blood and Sand" from the year 1922, in which the famous actor Rudolph Valentino took on the role of a young matador. The film tells the story of passion, glory and tragedy - elements that are also reflected in the intense colours and rich taste of the cocktail.

The speciality of the cocktail

The Blood and Sand distinguishes itself from other whisky cocktails through the use of Orange juice and Cherry liqueur (often Cherry Heering), which give it a fruity sweetness and a distinctive colour. The combination of smoky whisky, sweet fruit and a hint of bitterness makes it a balanced and complex drink.
