Quarter Deck Cocktail

Many rum cocktails have a close connection to seafaring. One of them is the Quarter Deck cocktail, first mentioned in 1929. Its origins can be traced back to the 18th century. Hardly any other drink illustrates the customs and traditions on the ships of the Royal Navy during the age of sail more than the Quarter Deck cocktail.

The quarterdeck was the highest open deck on naval warships. Officers and cadets would be found here to supervise the work of the sailors. Alcohol was regularly consumed. Rum was readily available on almost all ships and also served as a means of payment for part of the seamen's wages.

This rum was finally mixed by the officers with their beloved sherry and some lime. This successful combination no doubt made the often tedious time at sea more bearable. Necessity became a virtue, and one of the most elegant rum cocktails was born.
